Gli Incurabili [The Incurables] is the a new project promoted by Inside Venice and curated by Valeria Necchio – author, storyteller, and a New Venetian herself – to recount the city through the stories of the New Venetians, aka those who decided to come and live in Venice from elsewhere. The ultimate scope of the project is to create a tableau of voices and depict a complex picture of the city through the eyes of people of all ages and paths of life that actively decided to be rooted in Venice –– against all odds.
The project will consist of and develop through a series of conversations offering an original, dynamic, and humanising perspective of the city. Twelve stories, twelve interviews taking the form of informal dialogues between Valeria and the Incurabili themselves and spanning personal and professional spheres and including favourite places and bits of the city.
The title of the series is borrowed from “Fondamenta degli Incurabili”, the Italian translation of “Watermark”, an essay by the Russian Nobel Prize winner author Iosif Brodskij, whose incredibly moving and unique view of the city conveys a sentiment that is not unlike that of an incurabile; a sensibility that allows one to grasp the most subtle – and sublime – shades of Venice.
“After all, the most common stories, those made of bricks, have always fascinated me no less – and maybe more, than the exceptional ones, those made of marble“.
Iosif Brodskij
Gli Incurabili launched with an intimate gathering at Casa Flora, the physical hub of Inside Venice, where five out of the twelve New Venetians came together for an evening of chats, sharing and clinking glasses.
Below is a little snippet from the launch. The first interview will be published at the end of April on Inside Venice’s platforms. Stay tuned!
