Who are the “Incurabili”? They are dreamers, and a little bit lunatic in some way, that have bravely – or at least, this is what many would say – chosen to live in Venice.
But not exclusively. “Gli Incurabili” is also a new project promoted by Inside Venice and curated by Valeria Necchio – author, storyteller, and a New Venetian herself – to recount the city, primarily through the stories of the New Venetians, or rather “Venetians by choice”. The aim is to increase awareness of what it means to choose Venice as a home. Putting down roots in the lagoon is a complex, substantial change that these people have dealt with as best as they could, by actively participating in the community’s daily life and finding their own place in the Venetian social circle.
The story develops through a series of conversations that offer an original, dynamic, and humanising perspective of the city, by also sharing the personal and professional ups and downs of those who decided to reside in such a unique and fascinating place.
The series will be made of twelve stories, published monthly for the duration of a year. The interviews will take the form of informal dialogues between Valeria and the main protagonists of the series. The conversations will touch both a more personal dimension and common topics and issues, such as literary advice, favourite places, and other curious suggestions. The title of the series is borrowed from “Fondamenta degli Incurabili”, the Italian translation of “Watermark”, an essay by the Russian Nobel Prize winner author Iosif Brodskij, who, as few others, was able to convey a unique sensitivity and delicate love towards the city of Venice. A sentiment shared by New Venetians and their perception of the most subtle – and sublime – shades of Venice.
“After all, the most common stories, those made of bricks, have always fascinated me no less – and maybe more, than the exceptional ones, those made of marble“.
Iosif Brodskji
The project “Gli Incurabili” started with a lively launching event in Casa Flora, a physical hub of Inside Venice and the ideal place to let a project flourish, where five out of the twelve New Venetians gathered to enjoy a social moment, sharing ideas around a table full of cicchetti and cocktails… Password: lightheartedness, sharing, and participation.
Here is a little snippet of the event, with the highlights of this first encounter that started the series. The first interview will be published at the end of April on Inside Venice’s platforms. Stay tuned!
