Osteria L’Orto dei Mori is a really pleasant tavern.
It is located between the Church of Madonna dell’Orto and Fondamenta della Misericordia, in the heart of Venice, an area where Venetians go and enjoy its nice and lively atmosphere made of small venues, young people, and chats at sunset at a laid back pace.
Micael Nordio, one of the two owners, is there to welcome you. Their raw ingredients are excellent, processed with care and simplicity. The Venetian tradition is enhanced by Chef Lorenzo’s Sicilian origin, which gives a particular twist to the dishes. There is a good balance between sea and “earth” cuisine, dishes are tasty and flavourful, the wine list has character. You must try the big fried fish and vegetables dish and creamed codfish, which is one of the best in town.
You can dine al fresco in campo dei Mori, overlooking the canal, Rio della Sensa among Venetians and tourists looking for secluded and picturesque places. The name of the restaurant is connected to the story and legends of the Mastelli family, the moors indeed; they were Greek merchants who arrived in Venice in 1100. It is said that rubbing the nose of the statue of the Rioba, lost in the 19th century and then replaced with a piece of impromptu iron, will bring good luck.
The Osteria could be the perfect endpoint of a boat tour to enjoy the orange-rose lagoon sunsets.
