The Deli Gislon, best known as the “Deli in Sotoportego della Bissa”, is a Venetian historic venue that opened in the 30s and has been run by Tommaso Annicchiarico, Giorgio Giraldi and Adriano Marigo since 2006. The three partners took upon themselves to continue the noble tradition of the frying shop, a courageous decision, especially these days when everybody talks about healthy food.
No frills, no fake rustic or cheesy environment, the only star here is the golden crispy fried food. The deli vaguely resembles a nautical environment with furniture of the 90s and a long counter where you can find all the traditional Venetian dishes to taste standing or sitting at small tables in the quiet room upstairs.
Seafood is the star here: fish risotto, spaghetti with squid ink or clams, grilled squids, fried fish and of course cod in all its recipes (do not miss the creamy cod though).
However, the Deli Gislon owes its name to the deli products you eat standing at the counter, possibly drinking a small beer (birrino). Fried rice balls, fried potato or fish croquettes, meatballs, stuffed cannelloni, tramezzino sandwiches, you can find everything you want, but if Inside Venice had to say what not to miss, that would be the mozzarella in carrozza (fried mozzarella) with anchovies, one is not enough.
Honest prices. Closed on Wednesdays.
